I am currently seeking opportunities to teach workshops in new locations. My teaching areas include bookmaking, leatherwork, drawing/painting/printmaking, illustration, and digital media (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, as well as other parts of the Adobe Creative Suite). I specialize in the intersection of digital and analog processes, especially in relationship to heritage craft processes. I have been teaching within a university art/design program for 20 years, and creating workshops for all levels of community since 2012.
These images are from a workshop that I taught at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina in February 2023.
This beginner-level workshop lasted for 5 days, and participants created at least two leather journals and a small bookplate using the following processes:
Italian Longstitch Book Binding
Creating Original Repeating Patterns
Collagraph / Blind-Emboss Printmaking
Basic Leatherworking and Tooling
Basic Color Theory / Applying Leather Dye
This workshop can be adapted to fit different studios, time frames, and formats.

The Folk School transforms lives, bringing people together in a nurturing environment for experiences in learning and community life that spark self-discovery.

Processes covered: • Italian Longstitch Book Binding. • Creating Original Repeating Patterns. • Collagraph / Blind-Emboss Printmaking. • Basic Color Theory / Applying Leather Dye. • Basic Leatherworking and Tooling. Students created two embellished handbound books with their original designs, and a blind embossed bookplate in this one week workshop.

The bottom left image shows the completed book, and the larger image shows part of the process of creating the embossing plate, as well as a mocked-up longstitch book.

The image on the left shows the freshly embossed leather being separated from the embossing plate after going through the printing press. The image on the right shows the student's desk as they were building the embossing plate.

A small test swatch to calibrate settings on the printing press.

Leather dyes are similar to other water-based media. Dye colors can be blended together to create any desired color.

An embossing plate is shown on the left. Any number of thin, flexible materials can be used to create different textures and images that can be transferred to the leather using an intaglio printmaking press. On the right is the partially dyed and embossed leather book cover.

The Italian Longstitch structure is very adaptable. The pages of the book are sewn directly into the leather cover once the dying process is complete.

The cover of the book wraps fully around the interior, and can be fastened closed in a number of different ways, including the use of specialized hardware.

The finished books reflect the vision and inspiration of the individual artists. No prior experience is needed to be able to achieve beautiful results.

Both of these books were created by the same participant during the workshop.

I would welcome conversations about teaching opportunities in new locations, including developing new workshops. My skill set includes painting, drawing, printmaking, digital work, in addition to bookmaking and leatherwork. Please contact me with any inquiries.
